What if the Jews revolted against the Nazis? What if America never got independence from the British? What if the Renaissance period never came into existence? We have all studied history and it is full of interesting stories. There are hundreds of filmmakers that have made movies set in a particular era in the history, or about a famous historic event. However, it would be extremely interesting for the viewers to see the major historic events twisted and turned in an exciting manner. The best example of a movie that changed actual history is Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds.” The movie revolves around a bunch of agitated Jews during the holocaust period, teaming up to kill the Nazis and ultimately Hitler. There have been several world war movies made in the history of cinema and most of them have been sad and disturbing. On the other hand, Tarantino turned this dark period into an entertaining movie! There are hardly any sad moments in the film. Also, when the movie was screened in the war-torn countries like Germany, it broke the stereotype of war films being disturbing, and the audience actually enjoyed the exploits on the screen!
There are a few more of such movies that changed history, such as The Confederate, It Happened Here, The Englishman’s Castle and many more. Hence, when you can, you should always take the creative liberty and think of manipulating with the events that shaped the world. As you change the events that happened in the past, you make the viewers think how would the world have been if those events were real. It is always very intriguing to think how the world would have been if it would have seen a different history. Tarantino wrote a dialogue in “Inglorious Basterds” that best describes this – In the pages of history, every once in a while, fate reaches out and extends its hand. What shall the history books read? Hence, show your audience what the history books may have read if your depiction of the events was true. This is one of the most unconventional themes that you can explore if you want to make a movie that doesn’t smell mainstream. This is also a risky step to take as you can never be sure about the response you will get for your work. Majority of the movies with such themes have miserably failed. However, the ones that have succeeded have gone on to become cult classics! So, go ahead and make the world see its history through your creative eyes!
