Since you were born, you were told things a certain way. you were made to believe that the world functions in a particular way. You were further educated about the religion that you follow and the prevalent beliefs about the same. You were taught a standardised syllabus at school and college which told you how things really worked. Hence, since you gained consciousness, you were made to believe that the world, religion and the spiritual world acts in a specific manner. You were fed with news that claimed a particular event to have happened in a particular manner and you have never believed it to be true. However, what if you were told that all your life, you have been believing a lie? Conspiracy theory is a theory which believes that the reality that you have been believing in is not full proof, but a possibility. These theories give a reason to events that are by far unexplained. In majority of the theories, there is a secret society or a secret group of people who are responsible for various strange occurrences in the world. There are hardly a few people who know about such theories and are interested in exploring them. There is still a huge bunch of people who have no idea about such theories and are not open to entertaining an alternative belief. Hence, if you make a movie based on such theories, you can make the audience aware of various possibilities that can shake their current beliefs and give them new ones.
Out of the fear of not being accurate and effective, filmmakers usually choose not to make movies based on conspiracy theories. However, few such movies that have been made have gained immense success and recognition. Majority of these movies are Dan Brown adaptations. “ The Da Vinci Code” dealt with a secret group of people hiding a secret that would shake the foundations of Christianity. The movie shattered millions of beliefs when it showed that Jesus had a daughter. Not giving out further spoilers, the movie gave a dozen of possibilities that people thought never existed. Also, “Angels and Demons”, another of the Dan Brown adaptations, showed practices of the famous secret society, named ‘Illuminati’ against the Church. This movie also shattered a lot of beliefs and gave way to new ones. There are many other movies, like “The Vantage Point,” “JFK” and others that try and give authentic reasons to the unknown. Hence, if you are aware about such conspiracy theories and you feel that you can try and change the common belief, go ahead and make a movie which shows an unconventional side of the reality!
