Imagine that you are watching the “Titanic”. Jack meets Rose on the ship and falls in love with her. Rose has no fiancé to deal with and readily gets along with Jack. They have a sweet romance on their journey on the ship. There is no iceberg that hits the ship and they both happily reach their destination without facing any crisis. Both the characters are the same at the end of the movie as they were in the beginning. Would you be able to appreciate the movie in the same way if this was the original plot of the movie? No one would. For any good movie to succeed, it is essential to show a transformation in the characters. If your characters behave in the same way in the end like they did in the beginning, the viewers are likely to get bored with it. In order to increase the tension within the minds of your audiences, you need to show that the events that occurred throughout the movie had an impact on the characters.
When you talk about transformation, it is not just the physical or behavioural. You also need to make sure that your characters go through an emotional transformation during the course of the movie. People find it more authentic and can connect to Prince Albert more if he is finally able to get over his speech impediments and delivers a speech successfully to the entire State in “King’s Speech.” it is more authentic if Alex changes into a righteous man from a rogue at the end of “A Clockwork Orange,” You wouldn’t have loved “Fight Club” so much if Tyler would have never changed the protagonist into a man who is ready to fight his demons. Hence, it is necessary to show an emotional journey and transformation within your characters to make good cinema. These days, not many makers are inclined to show the transformation which is necessary to be portrayed in the movies. Filmmakers are getting lazier and they stick to a single identifiable characteristic of the characters. This doesn’t provide the movie with the richness and quality that is needed. Hence, pay the most attention during the pre-production stage of your film when you can make the maximum changes to the content and concept of the movie. It is your movie; give all that it takes to make it a good one!
