When it comes to making movies, there is a lot you can do to experiment. It is said that when the theatre was originated, the plays were structured in a way that the dialogues were not spoken, but sung into verses. Plays then started having more spoken dialogues and gradually we lost the essence of Musical plays. Centuries later, cinema came into being, which was a digital extension of the theatre. Thus, the magic and charm of musicals were completely lost. However, there are some filmmakers who still want to keep the magic alive and try to make musical movies. Musicals are one of the most difficult movies to write and construct. If you want to make a musical, the pre-production stage is the most crucial and difficult. You need to make sure that your meaning is conveyed through songs and you are also able to bind your audience together. Majority of the filmmakers do not take up the task of making musicals as they take a lot of creative as well as physical labour. Further, they do not guarantee success. As the taste of the audience is never predictable, your musical may be badly rejected. Thus, the makers these days prefer to play safe. However, if you want to take that leap of faith and make a musical that charms your audiences, you should definitely go ahead and craft one.
There haven’t been many successful musicals in the history of cinema, but there are two recent examples which prove that musicals are not dead. The first one is the fabulous “Le Miserables” by Tom Whooper, based on the famous French musical that is further based on a novel by Victor Hugo. The film deals with the lives of three characters who go through immense pain and struggle for the sake of survival, love and respect. It was a brilliantly directed movie that managed to keep the essence of the novel intact. Another remarkable musical is the recent “La La Land” that went on to win several Academy Awards. It is a very simple story of two people – Sebastian and Mia and their journey as they fall in love and struggle to get recognised in their respective fields of art. The movie recieved high critical acclaim, and it was said to have revived the older classic musicals. Hence, if you have a thing for experimenting in cinema and delivering something new to your audience, you should try making a musical. As most of your contemporaries are not doing the same, if you manage to pull off a successful musical, you are sure to be praised all over the world!
